I have been doing sites for about 7 years and I started out almost exactly like you described here. it is also true that many success stories online today are from website owners that know nothing about web design at all but they were good at promotion and marketing.

I believe almost anyone can start a site and make some money if enough time and effort is put it.

    You mentioned signing up for google and it reminded me of something I do that helps me keep track. I go into alerts and enter my site url there and then when ever a new site lists it I get an e-mail.

    Some of those social bookmarking sites are amazing! I do a digg article and 2 days later I see it in alerts!

    One more tip I would like to contribute is to submit to rss type sites if your site outputs rss.
